Poll feedback
The Poll on our homepage has run since November 2004, asking "What makes for a great workplace?" The 89 respondents were in agreement that the three most important factors in making an organisation a great place to work are providing satisfying and enjoyable jobs, providing opportunities to develop skills and knowledge, and having a supportive and friendly team. When employees are asked this question, the most common response is invariably "the people."
When asked what were the three most important factors detracting from an organisation being a great place to work, respondents indicated that poor supervision/management, unsupportive workmates, and inflexible work practices were likely culprits. These results do echo the sorts of comments employees make in our workplace surveys, although it is interesting to note that "unreasonable workload" - a common employee issue - was hardly mentioned by Poll respondents.
